Film professors Tracy Heather Strain and Randall MacLowry are seeking students for a semester-long Research Apprenticeship.
Professors Strain and MacLowry have produced over a dozen films for public television including episodes for American Experience, NOVA, and American Masters. Our independently produced documentary Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart about Lorraine Hansberry, best known for writing A Raisin in the Sun, premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, debuted on American Masters and won numerous awards, including a 2018 Peabody Award. Our most recent film, “Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space,” premiered on American Experience in 2023.
The 0.25 credit apprenticeship, which typically runs 10-weeks, offers students the opportunity to learn how non-fiction projects and documentary features are researched, developed and produced. Students will assist on two independent documentaries in the development and pre-production phases. The main focus will be content and archival research and story development. Students will also be exposed to other aspects of documentary production.
The apprenticeship is designed for sophomores, juniors and seniors who can make an 8-hour a week commitment; the hours are flexible from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday. Candidates must be responsible and detail-oriented with strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, writing and research skills. This is an in-person program that takes place at the Center for Humanities. We require the apprenticeship be completed for academic credit.
PLEASE APPLY PRIOR TO OR AT THE START OF SPRING SEMESTER. DECISIONS WILL BE MADE DURING DROP/ADD. Please email rmaclowry86@wesleyan.edu.
